RE: A Small Calculation Which Might Open Our Eyes!!

Vatsal has posted a post which raises some doubts on the popularity of our blog. (He always does that, doesn’t he ;) ). In reply, I decided to do some research on the way the Integrated stats system in WordPress (hereafter referred to as WP) works. I checked out their forums and support sites, but could not get what I was looking for.

In desperation, I decided to mail to the WP support center asking for clarification on this. Following is the mail I sent -

I just wanted some details about Integrated stats system. My question is – If someone opens my blog site and does not close the window while he is doing something else, is the stats counter incremented periodically (say every 1 hour or so). If so, then what is the duration of refresh?

Please help me with this.

Best regards,

Hashir

The reply came within minutes, and helped me breath with ease. Following is the reply -

Hi,

No, the counter does not increment periodically. Every time a visitor views a URL on your blog, the web brower loads a small smiley-face image from our stats system. The action is logged and the logs are summarized every few minutes to update the graphs, charts, and lists.

More information is available here: http://support.wordpress.com/stats/

So, my conclusions are –

  1. If we are visiting after logging in, the stats are not incremented.
  2. If we open the blog without logging in(and keep the window open for the whole day), the stats will increment by 1 only.
  3. If I am not wrong, since the cookie created by wordpress does not expire with time, the only way to erase it would be by shutting down your machine or (maybe) by logging off. Assuming we do that everyday, the counter will still increment by 1 every day.

Since we are unable to login from Satyam network only for the past one month or so, following are my calculations of the hits we have caused –

No. of people in Satyam network – 12

No. of days – 30

Weekends and holidays – 10

Days when we use Satyam network – 20

Therefore, hits due to us = 12*20 = 240

This is the maximum discrepancy we have caused in the stats. So, the rest of the visits are from others .

Having said that, I agree with Vatsal that a better measure of the popularity would be the number of comments we get from external audience – but then most people are real lazy when it comes to writing a comment.

And as long as we have our blog on wordpress.com, we can not use adsense – WP does not allow that. So, inspite of the fact that KD got the approval and the adsense code, we have to wait for us going to a third party host to start generating the revenue.

Hope this helps.

And Vatsal, keep asking such questions bro… helps us all to learn something new :D

  1. I thought of making a reply post to Vatsal’s one, containing the facts, when Savita mailed me the content of vatsal’s post today.

Yes, whatever Hashir said is correct. I already knew this, thus wanted to post it, but Hashir was quick enough to contact support team and get it out..!! Well done..!

I noticed and experimented this few times, as I wanted to understand how hits of my wordpress blogs are counted (of course, wanted to increase them ;-) ). When I logged-in it does not increase any, but if I visit without logging in, it adds up.

Sometimes, without logging in, I used to comment in MotA blog for some reasons, just by putting my name [Even abhi does that sometimes, his account name is abhipathak, but in some comments his name will appear as abhi], and thought this would add up some hits.

I once even used a web load testing tool, which would create multiple requests to a URL simultaneously, and wanted to see if it ups the hits count. It did NOT. It senses automated requests and does not add them as hits. :-|

So no need to worry. Regarding celebration, yes, it can happen, if we are going to celebrate without forgetting our duties of taking MotA to next level. Celebrations are motivational factors sometimes. A 10000 hits is definitely a remarkable achievement. It deserves a celebration. But, in my opinion, celebration should pave the way forward for MotA,..!

    • Exactly what I wanted to say.. ‘celebrations should pave the way forward..’, you put my thoughts in right words Boo sire..

and welcome back.. where had you been so many days???

  2. I remember seeing this text under out Global Dashboard –> Blog stats.. (where the graphs and other stuff are shown)

“Just a note: we don’t count your own visits to your blog.”

  3. Now this is an eye opener :) … I am really glad that because of my doubt I could learn so much and now I can flaunt in front of my friends about the hits counter (if I get a chance ;) )..

Really liked the way you took this task as a challenge and completed it within no time.. kudos yaar!!! Its clear now that people have started visiting our Blog but we’ll have to make them tempted to comment to make this a clear fact if we want that to happen…

However I am still firm on not caring about others visiting us, I mean I am happy if they dont drop by and happier if they like our portal :D .. but this depends on person to person :)

appreciate your zeal to get things done.. you can make a good manager :P ..

    Happy Blogging!!!

  4. Lets not visit our blog for a week and then see the change next week…..:-)

  5. I have a doubt ….?

If MoTA blog is for others and not for US……..I guess I should walk out….I am not writing for others!!!

It is for us and me that I write?!! :)

If commercialization is the word…then why a common blog?

By the way what are we selling??!!!

    • Kavitha,
we do not write for others….. nor do we write for hits. Do you think it would have mattered if we had no hits even after 3 and a half month? Not to any of us. We all write for ourselves…. as we wrote on Satyam blogsphere :D .
But the fact is ki our blog is popular outside…. and to tell you the truth I don’t mind at all :)

      • What the hell we are celebrating then boss??? if we dont care about others then we should have been posting just like we were when we started, why these posts congratulating on 1000, 10000 hits and all??

I am still not clear why others get so excited when the hits on our posts increase. Actually I am disappointed to see that more than 40% of the members are not contributing any posts, let alone comments. Isn’t this a fact to be considered rather than celebrating on milestones which utterly serve no direct purpose?? Kavitha said it right, if we are looking for commercialization then we should add it in the About The Manor tab. I am IN if we are going for that but just be clear what we are looking for.

If we are only concerned about letting our close MoTAites know about our feelings and thoughts, to hell with the rest of the world and we shouldn’t care a bit about the hit counts or the stats. If we are focussing on public attention and getting a word across about MoTA then we should better start marketting right now. I am not opposed to either approach. But for God’s sake, I cant take two stances at the same time. If we care for others, lets accept it and stop pretending. If we dont, then stop celebrating and making a fool of ourself.

Hope I was not offending while conveying my thoughts Hashir. This was directed to all those who are celebrating the 10000 hits, and not only you :) .

And yes, I forgot to mention in my first comment that I really appreciate that you took my post in a positive way and presented the actual facts rather than breaking out at me. Thanks for saving me from another Word War!!!

        Happy Blogging!!!

    • Completely agree!!!!

but I am not willing to walk out of thie wonderful manor :) .. sorry KK :D

  6. My decision is personalized….I don’t need any followers!!! :)

  7. Well done Hashir :-)

  8. Trust in God and do the right….
