There…another Ad-break… Ufff!
Ads are a source of revenue. Agreed. But they are a source of many other things… Different things to different people! For me, I use ads in print to play ‘Dot him a Bindi’ at the Ladies Club… Few of them are used to play find the ads…I keep the ad supplement papers for soaking the pakodas and puris..The Jewelry in ads are a topic for the ice-breakers for the ladies in my Training sessions. Sometimes it works for men too!
I use ads between serials to make my dinner; to respond to text… that’s how long an ad-break takes! Ads come up when there is just one scene to be done… Sometimes I forget which serial I am watching. Other times I don’t get the link…The punch-lines in ads are used in conversation and that leads to a topic for conversation on its own… Very few of them really manage to get an ‘Arey-wah’ or a Recall…
…those days, ads were more in print- in news papers, magazines, hoardings, Calendars… Models would be on home products and Gods would be on Agarbattis and Dhoop boxes. I remember keeping wrappers of God pictures in my notebooks. Choosing books would be a senti-session- which God-cover to select!
Vivek Oberoi’s dad Suresh Oberoi would be the model for Charminar Cigarettes. The hoarding would be on the way home… All girls awake in the bus would stop chattering and work hard on controlling their Ooh and Aaaahs when we passed the hoarding…. Deepak Parasher and Dhanraj Gir were two other men we would drool about! Bombay Dyeing Calendars with Nandini Sen, Kalpana Iyer and few others were sought after for their decently clothed models…
Then there was Lalitaji of Surf who would make men cringe with her Bhaaai-saab…! Then there was Shashi Kapoor’s son Karan Kapoor in Vivaldi suiting…and Lisa Ray in tow. There was Kapil Dev with ‘…da jawaab nahin.’ And there were these cutely done Amul ad series!
And then there was Lakshmi who refused to model for APCO Silk Sarees… with an “Ads?!!!…You are Mad!”
Tata.

Was this Lakshmi, the one who acted in Julie?!
no..it is Yours Truly out here.
OH! why did you reject…! My mom too rejected the Cooptex – Tamilnadu Handloom ad…!
My mum was disappointed that I refused the APCO offer…
She was one of a kind!
You left out the LUX ad’s which roped in all the high drawn actress of the time..!
There was the ravishing Dimple Kapadi ya in Crowning Glory…!
Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar – In Sutings ad – DiGjam!
Jayanth Kirpalani, Vivan Richards, Sean Conary – Old Spice, Vinodh Khanna – Cinthol , Dhara Singh ad, Solidaire TV, Dynora TV and many others that I am not able to recollect right now!
yeah the old ads were really owsome and if we sit to write about them.. the Dhara add of Jalebee, Natraj Phir Champion, I Love You Rasna, Aapki Paarkhi Nazar.. aur Nirma Super.. dono ko, Melody khaao.. khud jaan jaao and what not!! today’s ads are mostly stupid copies of foreign ads, mocking some forwarded jokes or making so-called emotional ads which try to sell their product by making you sad over some aspect of your life!!
And I never knew you are also into serials!! Dont tell me you are also following Balika Vadhu and gang!! I am at home right now and when these serials start… only these ads are the solely enjoyable part for me!
Happy Blogging!!!
arrey I am not into serials like Balika Vadhu…please!
